Background Info
Transmitted to humans from a mosquito bite, chikungunya is an alphavirus first observed in Tanzania in 1953. Symptoms in humans can manifest after 4-7 days after being bitten and include fever, joint pain, headache, and possibly a rash. Death is rare.
